Overview

The Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting, reporting, and tax activities. The Controller will be involved in creating and delivering presentations to the board finance and audit committees and will work closely with the senior leadership team.

 

The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations having functional responsibility over Financial Planning, Analysis and Controls, Accounting Operations, Financial Reporting, and Taxation. The Controller will ensure that AAA Life has the systems and procedures in place to support successful audits. The Controller is responsible for department computer applications; development, maintenance, and documentation of Finance controls. The Controller assists in the creation of corporate policies, objectives, and standards and helps shape the corporate control environment. This role works closely with department leaders and their associates, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to promote the finance function supporting the corporate objectives.

 

Responsibilities

  • Maintains direct responsibility for all AAA Life financial reports and fiscal records as well as all internal and external management reporting.
  • Ensures that proper accounting controls are instituted for all accounting systems, cost, and profit centers.
  • Plans and directs the development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting data to appraise profitability.
  • Supports the CFO in engaging the board and its finance and audit committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversees the preparation of financial reports and projections for Corporate Management and the Board. Presents results to management.
  • Primary liaison with insurance examiners, internal business personnel, external auditors, and other regulatory groups to exchange information and resolve issues and questions.
  • Determines and directs short and long-term goals, overall work assignments, and projects for the Controller Department. Ensures that adequate resources are available to attain current and planned goals.
  • Plans and directs the development of processes and changes to meet the current and future needs of the company for financial information.
  • Leads the department process relating to the selection, hiring, training, developing, mentoring, and counseling of staff, ensuring the attainment of AAA Life affirmative action goals.
  • Is a member of and actively participates in the Operating Committee providing updates, communicating information, and soliciting feedback regarding finance programs and initiatives.
  • Supervises staff in the timely completion and submission of all state filings.
  • Responsible for the implementation of new GAAP and statutory accounting pronouncements.
  • Works closely with the Actuarial department to review reserves and other financial data.
  • Analyzes Financial Statements and provides summarization of significant items.
  • Analyzes and appraises the operating results of each element of the Department and develops innovative ways to improve performance, enhance procedural flow, and resolve complex problems. Ensures that standards are maintained consistent with cost-effective objectives.
  • Actively participates in the development of the Financial Forecast Model by providing the Actuarial Department with expert opinions on accounting and finance issues developed from close involvement in the development of the Financial Forecast Model.
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance with all laws and regulations that govern the business processes in the department.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance associates, identify and develop future leadership, and address and handle any talent gaps appropriately to ensure optimal individual contribution and departmental goal attainment.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with associates at all levels; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. Candidates with a CPA, CFA, or CMA designation and/or Master's Degree in Business are preferred.
  • More than ten years of progressively more responsible insurance industry experience in finance, accounting, investments, budgeting, and the like including at least eight years in a management position.
